M5 is always all about Grenache and, as it is every year, the trick is to balance the crimson, aromatic, lean, bright, tight, crangrape, (crangrape is a made up word) tobacco, smoky, leather, earthy, Grenache, Counoise, Mourvèdre, Cinsault based components with the bombastic, dark, black, licorice, plum, fruity, tannic, bold, intense ripe, full-bodied Syrah we make. Light ruby red in color with red licorice, lean and dry, it’s like a 2007 Rhone with good acidity and not as fruity as M5 often is. The wine is persistent and still very young. The M5 mission statement: M5 is a wine that is from a thought – a blend that is an amalgamation of memories, both distant and recent, of wines I’ve tasted and loved the past thirty-three years.
51% Syrah (53% Colson Canyon Vineyard clone 877, 37% Great Oak Ranch Vineyard and 10% Purisima Mountain Vineyard that was pulled from a new Françoise Frères barrel), 32% Grenache (58% Alamo Creek Vineyard and 42% Grundoon Vineyards), 11% Mourvèdre from Camp Four Vineyard, 3% Counoise from Camp Four Vineyard and 3% Cinsault from Camp Four Vineyard. This is an eighteen barrel selection blended and crafted by Doug Margerum.
Distinctive dry, crisp, bright (but fruity) whites that are the perfect match with dining.
Doug Margerum’s Rhône varietal blends are made with a Burgundian sensibility.
Margerum Wine Company imports are Doug’s discoveries from France, Italy and Slovenia.
Doug is the winemaker for Happy Canyon Vineyards, and Cent’Anni wines.
